Mate Algarrobo

Algarrobo Mate. A mate gourd made from carob wood. Handmade in Argentina. The metal ferrule is made of stainless steel, and because the mate is not covered in leather, it is vegan. Wood has the advantage over pumpkin that it dries faster, thus greatly reducing the risk of mold growth (especially in winter). The flavor tends to be slightly more intense in wood than in pumpkin, but it's important to remember: always store the mate in a dry place and never leave it near a radiator or in direct sunlight for too long, as this will dry out the wood.

Before using the mate for the first time, I recommend "curing" it; this is done as follows:

1. Coat the inside of the mate with butter or neutral oil and wait about 1-2 hours until it has soaked in.

2. Next, take used or new yerba mate, moisten it with water at approximately 80°C, and let it stand for 24-48 hours.

3. Then remove the yerba and let it dry.

4. Now the mate is ready and you can drink from it.
